Why Online Education Is A Failure

The world is currently suffering from a huge pandemic and everything has been stopped . Education also had a deep impact on it.

Now schools have no other way to reach the children without online classes or virtual classrooms.

Teachers and school administrators have been advised to continue communication with students through virtual lectures or portals like Massive open online courses.

So to take education online our country needs infrastructure that is not so good , These are challenges faced by teachers and students In virtual classes.

That challenges are : Electricity , internet connections, devices like computers and smartphones.

Lets first talk about electricity first

Through 99% Indian homes have electricity connection ( accept to govt. data ) , the number of hours for which it is available every day.

The definition of electricity is different for govt. for ed : if a town has electricity it means that the town is electrified by it does not mean that each and every house has electricity.

But is it available for 24/7 hours ? If we talk about India Electricity can cut down anytime . It does not matter in which town or city you live .

There is a huge problem of power cuts In India During summers this problem increase rapidly and only 47% received more than 12 hours.

20% of the Household received less than 8 hours of electricity. 2/7 times there is no electricity there is no electricity.

Smart devices

Now a days children prefer mobile phone to study rather that Computers Buy in This country there is not much smartphones.

In the end of 2018 a survey was held and was to be found that only 24% of the Indians have Smartphones , Let;s assume that this number has increased to 30% percent in year 2020.

And the rest of the people do not have smartphone they just have keypad phones Which are also know as feature phones . No videos can be played on them and no internet can be used.

24% of the people who have smartphones : 1. Are these smartphones available for there students . 2. Are these extra phones. 3. Do they have mobile data to watch videos or surf internet.

Lets assume that there is a taxi driver and he has only one phone and there are two children in his house and They both have different online class.

So to which child phone must be given and the taxi driver also needs the phone for his duty. So there is no extra phone.

If we talk about data packs generally the data pack that every one have in there phone is only 1 GB , But is it sufficient for 5-6 hours of classes.

So can every one afford extra data pack. So this has became a big challenge for lower groups.

Only 8% of India’s households with members aged between 24 have both a computer and an internet connection.

The digital divide is evident across class, gender, region, or place of residence.

Among the poorest 20% of the households , only 2.7% have access to a computer and 8.9% to internet facilities.

In case of top households there are 27% and 50%

And also to take virtual classes a peaceful and a separate room to listen in needed which many cannot afford.

With the existing digital divide, expanding online education will push the digital have-nots to the periphery of the education system, thereby increasing increasing inequity in educational outcomes.

If the government continues online education without necessary supportive measure, the prevailing disparity in the virtual world could translate into widening educational inequalities among learners.
